My dearest friends were sitting in the living room. We had been looking forward to our girls weekend for months. Sadly, for much of the day I found myself struggling in my heart. We were laughing, having good conversations, enjoying our time together, but lies began to befall on me.
Feelings of insecurity plagued my thoughts and I couldn’t shake them. Despite my trying to filter truth, the feelings of unworthiness were persistent. As the day wore on, I was struggling in my mind and soul.
In a timid voice, I finally spoke and said, “I am struggling with so much insecurity and I don’t know why.”
In that moment the thoughts I had been battling in the depths of my heart for the entire day were cast into the light. The dark lies from the depths of hell no longer had a hold on me. Immediately, these women who know my sins, my pride, my hearts desires and greatest fears spoke life into the darkness, gathered around me and prayed for truth to deliver me from my tumultuous thoughts.
Truth was returned and my faith, the substance of all my hope, despite whatever isn’t seen or even often felt, rose up within me.
During these days of crisis, as a pandemic beats its way into our lives, I’m reminded of that evening and the power of confession.
1 John 1:9 says, “If you confess your sins, he is faithful and just to forgive you your sins and cleanse you from all unrighteousness.”
Community is so powerful, but community without confession is futile. There is power in confession.
Confession breaks the bonds of slavery and brings freedom.
Confession unlocks the power that darkness has over your life.
Confession breaks into the light and lifts our shame.
Confession brings about a beautiful release, for God uses confession to redeem and restore us to our rightful place.
Confession allows us to live free from sin and shame. Romans 8:1 says “there is therefore, NOW no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
However, not only should we confess our sins, but we should also confess our fears, our doubts, our worries, our anxieties and our insecurities. Each of these thoughts, though they are not sinful in and of themselves, have power over us and can pull us back into slaver. They can steal the freedom which Christ Jesus gave us. He did not die so that we could put on the old chains of slavery of which we have been delivered! He died for our freedom and our faith.
During these times of trials, we should move toward daily confession. Speak into the darkness your feelings and find freedom in the light of truth.
I am scared.
I’m worried.
What if we get sick?
What if you lose your job?
What if my parents get sick and I can’t get to them?
What if the kids schooling suffers?
God feels far away from me.
What if God doesn’t provide?
What if God doesn’t come through this time?
Speak your fears and worries and doubts into the light beloved, and allow him to shine his truth upon your face. Let his glory rise upon you. Break the shadows of darkness, despair and doubt and abide in his word of truth.
I am scared… I have not given you a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7
I am worried… Cast your cares on me for I care for you. 1 Peter 5:7
What if we get sick? By His stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53:5
What if I lose my job? The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. Psalm 23:1
What if my parents get sick? In my name…lay hands on the sick, and they will recover. Mark 16:18
What if the kids schooling suffers? I have given you everything you need for living a godly life. 2 Peter 1:3
God feels far away from me… Draw near to me and I will draw near to you. James 4:8
What if God doesn’t provide? I am come that they may have life and…have it more abundantly. John 10:10
What if God doesn’t come through this time? I will rescue you from the present day evil. Galatians 1:4
Every fear and doubt can be countered by his truth. When we confess, we are given the power to capture our thoughts, bring them into submission and transform our minds.
Truth transcends. Truth reinstates trust. Truth transforms.
Whatever your doubts, feelings and fears, trust God with each one. Speak them into the light of his glorious truth and your faith will lead you to salvation, knowing faith is the substance of all things hoped for even if it is unseen, uncertain and unsure. Truth will lead us to trust and trust will solidify our faith and faith will free us today and always.
